Spin The Bottle is a very challenging puzzle to solve, but luckily its much easier to build. Made from 5/16″ Cherry (somehow seemed fitting, lol ) with ceramic knobs and a lapel pin from an unknown period. A couple of weeks part-time and the average woodworker can have this built.

VPB #4 – Don’t Let It Out

Vintage Puzzle Box #4 or otherwise known as “Don’t Let It Out” is a curious contraption in that it uses miniature explosives (kids cap gun caps) to let out a big bang as the very last parts of the internal mechanisms align inside. I personally found it easier to build this system into a box that had some length to it rather than width. Also, very good to choose a box that has at least a 1/2″ head room in the lid. Other than the caps and two small rubber bands, all that is needed are the offcuts laying around your shop, and you could probably build this system in a weekend.

Skull Cage Puzzle Box

The Skull Cage is an “11 moves to open” puzzle box, made from Zebrawood and Walnut with a small quartz skull atop that function like a key. This set of plans is for the 750 ml size bottle that remains locked until the user finds the secret code, decodes it and figures out how to enter it into the system. An average woodworker could likely have this puzzle box made over the course of a week of part time hours.

VPB #7 – Flying Free

VPB #7 is made using a simple unfinished dollar store box. The mechanism itself is a “7 moves to open” locking system. The decorating of this little jewel was done by a local artist Nicole Lees. Since you are starting with an existing box, this design can be made in a few hours, as for the finishing, that could likely take a little longer.

The Eagle Nest Chest

The Eagle Nest Chest features an internal clock lock system with special adaptations to the mechanism designed to allow all of the operation to be carried out from behind the front panel. Once you can access the 7 dials found behind the front panel and have properly aligned their individual settings to the correct alignment, then may you enter the chest. A video demonstration of this chest can be seen on the “In The News” page. To build this whole chest complete with locking system and decorative features could well take a woodworker a month in the shop.

VPB #6 ~ Nips

The cardboard box is not especially great for enduring the sands of time, but sometimes these little boxes are worth tackling. And really, these boxes can make for great opportunities to practice your craft. This simple locking mechanism can be built in a afternoon of fun in the shop. The locking mechanism has been designed so that the lid will only open if the right sequense of events have happened. This particular design is probably the quickest and easiest to build, not to mention a great design to start out with at the risk of spending $1.

Booze Bank Puzzle #1

We have all seen the various wine bottles that are locked up with rope detanglement puzzles on the market for years, so I thought it was high time for a revisit to the classic “Lock Up The Bottle” type puzzle. This design is the 1st in a series of puzzle boxes designed to lock up bottles of liquor, wine or a Coke bottle for example. This project could take the average woodworker about a week of partime hours in the shop (about 15 hrs). The code to the locking system is found right on the bottle.

Recycled Chest of Drawers

This Recycled Chest of Drawers was designed to illustrate a simple dial shaft locking system. In this example, each drawer has one dial to unlock it. You can play with the randomness of their allocation with the drawers, it only adds to the fun of opening it. Now, one dial per drawer isn`t very hard to pick open, …but, if you have 4 or more dials locking a single drawer, the odds get that much more difficult, if not near impossible to pick open. This set of plans doesn’t get too much into the building of the chest itself, I figure we all know how to do that by now. There is a small recap of events in general since this chest was made using mainly recycled materials. The main section of the plans detail how to build the dial locking system. If you have a dresser already built, you could possibly add this locking system to your project in an afternoon.

Vintage Puzzle Box #3

VPB #3, a “3 moves to open” puzzle box is made from Birds Eye Maple and has a hinged lid. This locking mechanism features a removable foot that will act like a magic wand to align the inner parts to the solution position. The origninal box was sourced, built by another great fanatic of fine woods, though mysteriously it was an unsigned piece. You too can build this locking mechanism in just a few hours of shop time.
